Successful Defense Education Forum

On April 7, 2015, the Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA) held its first Defense Education Forum, bringing together Rhode Island high school and university administrators and teachers with representatives of the state’s leading defense companies.  This forum is part of an outreach program, developed by SENEDIA through a grant from the RI Governor’s Workforce Board, to build the pipeline of future workers prepared to support Rhode Island’s growing and well-paying defense industry.
The event, held at the East Bay Educational Collaborative in Warren, was designed to provide information to the educators on national security job opportunities and career pathways in Rhode Island for their students.  As a follow-up to the forum, SENEDIA representatives will make school visits to engage with students directly about these opportunities. Over seventy people attended the forum including educators from Bristol-Warren, Chariho, Cranston, East Providence, Middletown, North Providence, North Smithfield, Portsmouth, Providence, and Tiverton.  Also attending were representatives from the Community College of Rhode Island, New England Tech, Rhode Island College, and Salve Regina University, as well as the RI Commerce Corporation, the RI Department of Education, the RI Department of Labor and Training, the RI Governor’s Workforce Board, and the RI STEM Center.  The forum included a presentation on the variety of national security careers as well as information on available work shadowing, mentoring, and internship programs.  Video highlights from the event can be viewed at: http://youtu.be/lnNcazrOMBU.
