RI STEAM Day – 21 March 2018

The Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA) will be sponsoring Rhode Island (RI) STEAM Day at the RI State House on Wednesday, 21 March 2018 from 3-6pm.

“The future workforce in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) fields will ensure continued innovation and growth for the RI economy and the RI public education STEAM ecosystem is building these future workers. The continued growth of the RI Defense Cluster depends on the determination, creativity and curiosity of our students today, who will be our workforce tomorrow,” said Molly Donohue Magee, SENEDIA Executive Director.

RI STEAM Day will highlight the numerous initiatives in STEAM education throughout Rhode Island. Schools, students and programs have been invited to showcase and promote their work and talents, bringing awareness to the various STEAM opportunities across the state that are available to students and their families. These programs are preparing students to be career ready to meet the future workforce needs of RI businesses.

Under the leadership of Governor Raimondo, Rhode Island has developed and is implementing Prepare RI, an initiative to improve career readiness through strategic partnerships between government, industry, education and nonprofits across the state. Supporting and expanding STEAM education and programming are at the forefront of this effort.

“By allowing our students to develop transferable skills through STEAM education, we are preparing them for future success in our ever-changing world. By developing future innovators, critical thinkers and problem solvers and providing them with the necessary skills, we are creating the RI leaders of tomorrow. Promoting and supporting our RI STEAM education ecosystem is critical to the RI economy,” stated Linda Larsen, SENEDIA Director of Education Outreach.

During RI STEAM Day, excellence in RI STEAM initiatives will be acknowledged by state leadership.   Governor Raimondo, House Speaker Mattiello and Senate President Ruggerio will provide remarks.

RI STEAM Day will include over 20 interactive displays that will line the State House rotunda. Students and educators will be demonstrating STEAM education initiatives, with informative presentations that will allow student and family engagement. Parents, students, teachers, administrators, local and state leaders, representatives from industry, community partners and community members are all invited to attend.

RI STEAM Day is part of SENEDIA’s education outreach effort to build the pipeline of future workers and is supported in part by Real Jobs RI.
