Northrop-Grumman RI Team Focus is Modeling and Simulation Development
The Mission Systems Readiness (MSR) Business Unit of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is headquartered in Middletown at 88 Silva Lane (Tech IV). The unit is a leader in development of Naval Modeling and Simulation systems as well as in Test and Evaluation, and has over 350 people in Middletown, Mt. Laurel NJ, Dahlgren VA, and Wallops Island VA. A primary focus of our Rhode Island-based team is our M&S development effort, featuring both evaluation systems and subject matter experts, and readiness systems for ship crew training.
In partnership with its customers, MSR has developed state-of-the-art training systems from a re-usable maritime simulation architecture that the Navy has labeled the PC-based Open Architecture Training System, or PORTS. High fidelity training is enabled by modern PC capabilities and data distribution methodologies, and the PORTS architecture realizes the promise of increased effectiveness in naval training for a vastly reduced cost. PORTS trainers have replaced high-cost, high-maintenance tactical-equipment based training systems at Newport’s Surface Warfare Officer’s School (SWOS), and at Fleet ASW Training Center in San Diego. We have also answered new or emerging requirements using the PORTS architecture, such as our Tactical Data Link trainer (Dam Neck), our RSC Radar Trainer (Center for Surface Combat Systems, Dahlgren), and the Naval Tactical Training System for Littoral Combat Ship. Introduction of product features like an Intelligent Tutoring System and embedded CBT have increased the dimensions of our training product line, while drastically reducing the scope of instructor manning requirements. As a software-based system, upgrades are relatively simple to execute and are quickly delivered. PORTS’ high return on investment has led to its important role in the Navy’s Train-to-Qualify initiative, a key objective in the era of reduced manning for new platforms.
