SENEDIA Joins Senator Jack Reed on 'the Hill"

September 18, 2009

SENEDIA Participates in Senator Jack Reed’s Business Leaders Day in Washington.

Annually, Jack Reed is the honorary co-sponsor (with the Rhode Island Food Dealers Association) to host a day on Capitol Hill.  Over 100 Rhode Island Business Leaders attended this year.  The trip included an airline trip and bus transportation to the Nation’s Capital.  A dozen people from SENEDIA member companies represented the alliance.

Senator Reed’s high respect and connections in the Government resulted in an exceptional array of speakers from a wide spectrum of Government organizations who provided frank and open comments about issues facing out Nation today.  Speakers included Senators John Kerry (D-MA) (Chairman, Senate Foreign Relations Committee) , Susan Collins (R-ME) ( Ranking Members, Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs), Carl Levin (D, MI), Lamar Alexander (R-TN) (Chairman, Senate Republican Conference) and Rhode Island’s own Congressional Delegation of Senator Whitehouse and Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Jim Langevin.  We were also fortunate to hear from Ted Kennedy, Jr., Son of the late Senator Edward Kennedy who dropped in to the hearing room that had just been re-named in honor of this father.    Other senior Government leaders that we heard from were Ken Salazar (Secretary of the Interior), Mary Shapiro (Chairman of the SEC), Kathleen Sebelius (Secretary of HHS),  Ben Bernanke (FED Chairman) and Jared Berstein (Chief Economist and Economic Policy Advisor to the Vice President).  We were also treated to two exceptional talks by two members of the media that included Chris Matthews (Host of “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and “The Chris Matthews Show” on MSNBC) and Charlie Cook (Publisher, The Cook Political Report, and Political Analyst, The National Journal Group).

This event is a prime example of how the people of Rhode Island are in a unique position in being able to closely associate with National leaders on a personal level. SENEDIA uses this position to stay in the forefront in areas that directly enhance the ability of our local companies to thrive.
